Project Overview

Following the commercialization of sorghum malt project by the Council which impacted on the brewery industry.  The Council collaborated with a research institute to develop two sweet sorghum varieties with short duration of between 80 -133 days maturity period, biomass yield of about 96MT/Ha and sugar content of 19-28% brix.


This variety will give 4,500MT of ethanol from a 50 ha plantation. The Niger State Government has provided 45 hectares of land in the state farming location for the village model plant. The project on completion will generate employment and save foreign exchange for the nation. So far, eleven varieties were developed of which two varieties have been released.  The equipment for the processing of the sweet sorghum has been developed with a private sector. The developed plant was designed to produce glucose syrup, ethanol and livestock feeds.
