PREPARATION OF HIGH GRADE CARBOXYMETHYL CELLULOSE(CMC) FROM COTTON STALK, SAWDUST AND CORN HUSK

Project Overview

To assess the technical feasibility of producing high-purity CMC from cotton stalk, sugarcane bagasse and sawdust cellulose using both alkalization and esterification approach while establishing a new, sustainable and profitable means of converting disposal waste into a valuable revenue stream.

Project Location : ABU Zaria

R&D 100% completed- All three lignocellulosic materials investigated-cotton stalk, sugarcane bagasse, and sawdust—are viable and effective feedstocks for CMC production. The choice of the "best" feedstock depends on regional availability, existing infrastructure, and economic factors rather than technical impossibility. The production is not only feasible but also a demonstrably effective strategy for valorizing agricultural and wood-processing waste into a high-value, versatile biopolymer.
